The motive determines the outcome. If the intention is egoistic, the result is not as fulfilling as if the intention is altruistic.

There are different degrees such as giving for the sake of receiving, giving without receiving, and giving for the sake of bestowal. I would say the correct one depends on where you’re at spiritually.
